We mainly use two words: nicht and kein. Nicht negates verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. For example: Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. or Er ist nicht alt. Kein is for negating nouns. It changes with gender and case: kein, keine, keinen. An example is: Ich habe kein Auto.
So, remember: nicht for actions/descriptions, and kein for things. Practice makes perfect!
