Emotions and Feelings – Expressing with Reflexive Verbs

Hello dear students! Today, we'll learn how to express emotions and feelings in German, specifically using reflexive verbs. These verbs indicate that the action returns to the subject itself.

For example, sich freuen means "to be happy." Here, sich shows that the person experiencing the feeling is the subject. So, you'd say "Ich freue mich" (I am happy) or "Du freust dich" (You are happy). Another example is sich ärgern – "to get annoyed" ("Ich ärgere mich").

This form of expression is very common in German and helps convey feelings precisely. Remember that each reflexive verb has its own specific reflexive pronoun, which you'll easily master with practice!
