Ordinal Numbers and Date Expressions

Hey everyone! Today we'll learn how Ordinalzahlen – ordinal numbers and dates – are used in German. It's quite simple!

To form ordinal numbers (like first, second), we generally add -te to numbers 1-19 and -ste to numbers 20 and above. For example, der erste (first), der zweite (second), der zwanzigste (twentieth). Note exceptions like dritte (third) and siebte (seventh).

We use these ordinals for dates. To say "Today is the first of May," we use Heute ist der erste Mai. But for "on the first of May," it becomes am ersten Mai, adding an -n due to the Dative case. Remember am means "on the." You'll master this with practice!
